IDENTITY THEFT & FRAUD

Stop new access first, document the theft second, then clean each affected system.

Educational information, not legal or financial advice. Verify deadlines and requirements with the relevant agency, creditor, court, or a qualified professional.

// 01

Contain access

Freeze all three credit reports, secure email and financial accounts, and replace compromised credentials.

// 02

Create the official report

Use IdentityTheft.gov to build a recovery plan and identity theft report. File a police report when the situation or institution requires it.

// 03

Block fraudulent information

Send bureaus the identity theft report, proof of identity, and identification of fraudulent items for FCRA §605B blocking.

// 04

Repair the ecosystem

Contact each affected company, monitor bank and specialty reports, and preserve confirmation numbers and correspondence.

Use this checklist.

  1. Freeze each bureau separately.
  2. Use multifactor authentication.
  3. Do not send full identity documents unless required.
  4. Recheck reports after blocks and closures.
