Personal Information Dispute Letter

Removing old and inaccurate personal information prevents credit reporting agencies from linking you to old debts and possibly debts that do not belong to you. This letter is sent directly to Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Include a copy of your state-issued ID and Social Security card.

Sending instructions

  • Send to all three credit reporting agencies: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax
  • Include a copy of your state-issued ID and Social Security card
  • Send via certified mail with return receipt
  • Keep a copy for your records, including the tracking number
  • Credit reporting agencies have 30–45 days to investigate and respond
  • If no response within 30 days, the disputed items should be removed
  • Never dispute online — you waive rights by choosing that option
