LATE PAYMENTS

Separate reporting errors from accurate late payments before choosing a letter.

Educational information, not legal or financial advice. Verify deadlines and requirements with the relevant agency, creditor, court, or a qualified professional.

// 01

Audit the timeline

Compare statements, due dates, payment confirmations, deferment agreements, and all three credit reports.

// 02

Dispute only inaccuracies

If the date, status, amount, or identity is wrong, send a narrow dispute with the supporting record.

// 03

Ask for goodwill when accurate

For a one-time hardship on an otherwise strong account, explain briefly, show the account is current, and request a courtesy adjustment.

// 04

Build fresh positive history

Automate minimum payments, lower revolving utilization, and preserve older positive accounts where appropriate.

Use this checklist.

  1. Never call an accurate late payment “fraud.”
  2. Attach only documents relevant to the exact error.
  3. Set autopay plus a calendar reminder.
  4. Track each creditor and bureau response.
